Interview:

This is an extremely loaded question because I’m an atheist/antitheist and I would have to define some terms before going any further. First off, I’m an atheist because I don’t believe in the concept of God or gods as anything more than intermittently amusing fairy tale fodder. Secondly, I’m an antitheist because I think that religion in general is a really bad idea and that I’m against it, although I don’t waste much effort worrying about it. Thirdly, I must define the term “spirituality” for the sake of discussion. I cannot discuss spirituality in terms of the supernatural because I don’t believe in it. If we use the term spirituality to mean something pertaining to the “spirit” or soul of a human being, I could probably approach this. In most people there are deeply seated beliefs of some sort and for the sake of semantics, I’m comfortable calling this the “soul” of a human. It doesn’t have anything to do with God or religion or the magic boogie-man from Planet Z. I have found music to be a very useful structure in which to explore and realize many aspects of my psyche. It’s a human construct, sort of like a vast skeleton that one can pour whatever she wants into. Anything can be projected upon music and that’s why it has endured as a form. In life there is only whatever point we give it, so music has given me a very focused direction or thrust. It’s equal parts business, pleasure, pain, necessity, entertainment, exercise, discipline, and nourishment. Making music is my life’s work and I don’t approach it with some quasi-religious zeal and righteousness. It’s a very stimulating activity that I derive multiple sensations from and my relation to it is extremely complex.

I have found music to be a very useful structure in which to explore and realize many aspects of my psyche.”
