Interview:

Music has always been connected with spirituality. We can see it in the early days of Gospel and Folk, we can see it in the entranced haze of the Sixties, and we can see it today within the realms of many music genres. Music is a direct extension of someone’s emotional and spiritual outlet. Music heals and hurts; it has caused life and death, and everything in between.

One of the main reasons why I am a Christian today is because of the music I listened to as an adolescent. With Cool Hand Luke, Living Sacrifice, and Zao, there was something deeper than just a solid riff or melody. Regardless of who you are or what you believe, there is a good chance that the reason why your favorite bands are who they are is because, somewhere down the line, they connected with you drastically on an emotional or spiritual level. Depending on your religion, and what you believe, your relationship between music and spirituality could be one and the same.

“Music has always been connected with spirituality… Music is a direct extension of someone’s emotional and spiritual outlet.”
– Timothy McTague, guitarist in Underøath
