Interview:

Music is spiritually significant as are all of the things I say, do, and think. It’s the product of the heart and mind. Writing music is simply giving the sponge a little squeeze, and seeing what comes out. My concern is that one day I’d look back, see what came out of the sponge, and say: “There’s little evidence there of God’s work in my life, few fingerprints of His creativity”. I hope that’s never the case. For me, it means taking time to scrutinize my lyrics, after the passion of writing diminishes, to see if there’s intentional or unintentional ambiguity where there should be clarity, especially on controversial issues. The difficulty is expressing honest struggle while being truthful at the same time. It’s possible to be honest, and leave an impression you’re happy with in your current state, and inadvertently sell that state to someone else, increasing their misery. It’s also possible to be truthful and very arrogant, as if you’re the only one who ever came on that truth. See, the problem is my duplicitous nature. Part of me wants honesty, part of me hates it. Part of me wants to make God famous, and part of me would set myself up as king. This comes out in what I say, and what I don’t say. The editing process is brutal for anyone venturing into clarity. If the hope is impact on the thoughts people have, it forces a painful self-examination that should give me pause for thought before breaking out the pen. Ambiguity is the easy way out. Postmodernism says: “Let them have it however they’d like it”. It’s much more difficult to land on something solid.
