Interview:

I think God has a soft spot for musicians, especially songwriters… AND, wait for it, especially ones that live in New Zealand. I mean, look at the first existing reference of a singer-songwriter in the Bible. David was cited as being closest to the heart of God, and his story opens with him minding the sheep in the fields, see? New Zealand!, playing the harp. I like to think he was playing Joanna Newsom’s “The Book of Right On” with some lyrical tweaks to the first verse: “I killed Goliath… with a sling shot…”. He then proceeds to get a regular gig (the Bible is full of wondrous miracles) playing for the King of Israel, Saul. He then goes from support act to headliner, takes over the Kingdom and writes the very first definitive “Songbook” (aka “Psalms”), which wins a Grammy – I’m not sure about the validity of that last reference, I found it on Wikipedia.

So, now that I’ve established how significant music is to God, I believe that God is the Musician of all Musicians and that He created music as a language that can be spoken in any tongue to any creature. We’ve all heard about singing to our plants and the effect it has on them, how much more to a human being? Music speaks to a person’s spirit before it even hits their analytical brain, letting the heart get caught up in God’s language before they even realize they’re having a conversation with Him.
