Interview:

I’m not someone who knows much about spirituality, other than to say I hope there is something more to live for than sixty-five years, a mortgage, Rock music, a picket fence, and an SUV. I hear there is something substantial in the universe, something permanent, and that the sky is going to rip open someday. Music is the thing in life that most points to the reality of living for something else. There is a cry in every human heart to belong to something, to be part of something else.

We are disenchanted with what this world has to offer, and we are longing for something that won’t let us down, and won’t burn out or fade away. For me, music is the way my heart expresses such a longing, points to a hope, and lifts the heavy spirit that is tired out in the cold dark night. Music helps remind me that daylight is coming, and help is on the way. It’s in the high moment of a song that I’m reminded to wait for the sunrise. Music points to the only hope that can sustain the desires of my heart.
