Interview:

All music is very theological; it is inescapable. By this prior absolute, I simply mean that all communication, much less music, expresses an artist’s worldview in the form of a metaphysic, an ethic, and an epistemology. However, within this expression is the truly “significant” aspect, whereby a creation exalts “self” with a gift or faithfully exalts the Creator. In essence, there are only two types of artists; the obedient and the disobedient, easily defined by “who” the source that their gift is drawing attention toward; one lifts Christ up so that He may draw His children to Him, and another can be seen on MTV’s “Cribs” creating little more than a covet buffet. Sadly, because the majority of humanity responds zealously to anthems championing hedonism or materialism, and are therefore uncomfortable with a lyric addressing self-control, accountability, or reverence for the Lord, it is up to the artist to surrender all motives and not confuse “arithmetic with righteousness”, where “bigger equals better”. If ever an ambassador of Christ has their efforts found offensive, please let it be for the lyrical content bringing the listener to a place of internal reflection and conviction, not for our very obvious and very poor mimicking of the musical mainstream. Douglas Wilson said in his book “Angels In The Architecture: A Protestant Vision For Middle Earth”, “Where once the inspiration of the Spirit of God inspired the writing of symphonies and construction of cathedrals, now we offer pop songs and strip mall outlets”. And still, God has not changed. May we all demonstrate with our artistic expressions just what a great and mighty God we serve.
