Interview:

The spiritual significance of music is in the ear of the beholder. Whilst the writer of a lyric is portraying an ideal, the reader, or listener has their own perceptions to the meaning of the song. Just as a picture or a photograph can conjure up many different meanings to the viewer, so can a song. Therefore, the spiritual meaning of a song can be many things to many people. Many of my songs with Mortal Sin are black and white in their story. If you read between the lines you may discover something very personal, or something that may hit a nerve. This is the beauty of the English language, and also the beauty of people having different perceptions. I would hope that anyone who reads a lyric to a song would not delve too deeply, as I believe the story is more important than the meaning. The purpose of an entire song is enjoyment. Not all songwriters are there to send a message out to their fans. For Mortal Sin the music always comes first; the message in our music is a bonus only if it is read correctly.

“The spiritual significance of music is in the ear of the beholder.”
