Interview:

One of the most obvious aspects about music is that it’s a form of human expression. I think it’s both interesting and telling to note that music is very much mathematical. Why? Mathematics helps one describe things in ways that aren’t always possible through ordinary language. Music plays a similar role in human expression, because it needs no translation. We all speak the language of music, which is why it is so very significant to human spirituality. In essence, words are simply noises to which we attach meaning. Music is similar, yet the meaning or expression is one of an emotive or emotional level. We can all distinguish music that is upbeat, somber, frightening, funny, and aggressive. When we do, we recognize it on a purely emotional basis. This emotional expression is music’s spiritual significance. Music communicates to others, without words, what we feel or want them to feel. The spiritual aspect of music is pivotal to giving it’s human element. Any one of us can distinguish the difference between automated or programmed music and a human performance. Human performances are much more organic and emotive. They have an energy about them. It’s an emotional energy that compels us to act and inspires us. So, the spiritual significance of music is to emotionally communicate.

“Emotional expression is music’s spiritual significance.”
