Jordan Galland

// Guitarist & Vocalist in Dopo Yume

JORDAN GALLAND is a guitarist and vocalist from rock band Dopo Yume based in New York City. “Yumania [EP]” (2001), “In The Bedroom” (2002), “True Romance” (2003) and “The Secret Show” (2006) are all independently released and available from Dopo Yume. “Dopo” is Italian for “after”, and “Yume” is Japanese for “dream”, so a transliteration of Dopo Yume would be “After Dream”. Interview:

It is funny that we “play music” because sometimes it seems that music “plays us”. Whatever music we listen to will determine our immediate relationship to the physical space around us, influencing our emotional environment, like ancient magic. A person’s spirituality runs deeper than their emotions, but the more consistently music influences our emotions, the more we have a chance of stirring our spirituality. My experience of music is more neurotic than most people would like. There are two parts to it. Writing, recording, and rehearsing allows me to practice the art of “relinquishing” which is to be able to fall in love with an idea, and then let it go, if need be. It’s like in the army: sacrificing the few for the many; for the greater good. The second part is the actual live performance. When I am playing guitar and singing, I feel like I am forced into a singularity of purpose, like an athlete, composed and focused, and yet as reckless as a drunken skydiver. Therefore, I conclude that the spiritual significance of music is that it helps us, as dualistic creatures living in black and white, connect for a moment to the inherent contradictions of our existence.
