Sanvicens from Xtreme Music received responses to an e-mail interview
with Spencer Seim of Hella on July 14, 2004.
Xtreme Music: How
would you describe your music?
Spencer Seim: Peace, love and french fries.
Xtreme Music: Who are your main influences
& how have they shaped your musical direction?
Spencer Seim: George W. Bush, Patrick Swayze, and the Olsen twins
are all subconscious influences that effect the way we play music.
Xtreme Music: What
innovative production techniques do you incorporate into your music?
Spencer Seim: We just try and record our music to sound the way we
like music to sound. If we have any innovative production techniques,
I don't remember what they are.
Xtreme Music: What
has it been like working with 5RC Records?
Spencer Seim: 5RC is great, they have lots of exciting good new music
for the future.
Xtreme Music: Where
do you find your inspiration musically?
Spencer Seim: Every day life, coffee, words, lerks, flat tops, people
who think they are the reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix.
Xtreme Music: When was the most enjoyable
experience in your music career?
Spencer Seim: Our first day of playing in Hella.
Xtreme Music: Could you mention some of the
music you've done with your other music projects like Generic and
Nervous Cop?
Spencer Seim: Generic is the first formation of The Advantage. It's
fun as hell playing nintendo songs from games we grew up on. As far
as Nervous Cop goes, Zach is not here to answer but I can say that
he is extremely proud of that project.
Xtreme Music: How's your live performances
with Hella been going & what has the crowd reaction been like?
Spencer Seim: Our live shows have been going great. It has changed
month to month since we began. We are a totally different band then
we were last year or the year before.
Xtreme Music: Tell
us about your latest full-length album "The Devil Isn't Red".
Spencer Seim: We had much more time in the studio for this record
than "Hold Your Horse Is". It gave us the freedom to process
the songs in our brains over a longer period of time so we could adjust
them to more accurately represent the way we feel the songs should
sound.
Xtreme Music: What's
going to be on the Hella DVD which is currently in the works?
Spencer Seim: All kinds of stuff. We might release a seperate DVD
just of our Japan tour. I guess we will find out as it progresses.
Xtreme Music: What's happening in the near
future for Hella?
Spencer Seim: Double disc album put out January 2005 on Suicide
Squeeze Records. |
