Sanvicens from Xtreme Music received responses to an e-mail interview
with Gavin Dunne on November 9, 2004.
Xtreme
Music: How would you describe your music?
Gavin Dunne: My music comes straight out of me, I try not to base it
around any structures or formats, just whatever comes through and feels
right. So i would say sound based on emotion.
Xtreme Music: Who are your main influences & how have they
shaped your musical direction?
Gavin Dunne: As I've got older my influences have developed a lot. Morricone,
Goldsmith, Poledouris and some others in the film score arena are big
influences on the music I want to write. Guys like Patton and Zorn have
made me look outside the box and improvise. And then Beethoven and Rachmaninov
remind me you need to write stuff of quality and substance.
Xtreme Music: How has the music of Mike Patton & John Zorn
helped to develop your own compositional style?
Gavin Dunne: Listening to Patton i realised that the voice is just another
instrument, and the better your voice the more you can do with it. Zorn
was a big influence in that sound is sound and you don't need to put
a label on it. For me there is no sound to crazy anymore as its only
sound, it doesn't have to fit into any particular format.
Xtreme Music: What innovative production techniques do you incorporate
into your music?
Gavin Dunne: I suppose using my voice as an instrument. I can't sing
in traditional ways but I can manipulate my voice into sounds that will
complement the other instruments, so a lot of the time you would actually
think its an instrument. Whatever is around the room can be used for
effect also whether it be a glass of water or a set of keys.
Xtreme Music: Tell us about the latest music you've been working
on.
Gavin Dunne: I've been working on a symphony but have come to a point
where I can't go any further without reducing the quality. I'm hoping
I'll get over that hurdle pretty soon.
Xtreme Music: What's happening in the near future with your
music?
Gavin Dunne: I have a lot of spare time on my hands at the moment so
I intend to tighten up my production techniques and focus on film/game
music for a while, personally I feel I need to tighten up a lot and
make less music with more quality. |
