Interview:

Music is a key for me to contact my spirit. After I play, at home practicing, at rehearsals, at a gig, or recording session, I always feel more in tune with myself. I am nicer to be around, less anxious, and more peaceful. Music is a way for me to center myself and spend sometime with spirit. For me, music is like a meditation. I’m always thinking, wondering, planning, and judging; my mind is churning. Hearing music takes me out of my head and into the world around me. While walking down the street I can turn my thoughts off, or at least down, by listening to the birds. It relaxes me. A car coming down the street blasting a deep bass Hip-Hop or a Reggae jam makes me feel happy. I feel connected to the world, at peace in the world, and in this way connected to the Divine. Playing music is just a more focused aspect of this. When I’m playing, I’m connected to the other musicians, and my heart opens up. I want to express myself. I feel connected to some silent aspect of myself that seems to have been waiting for an open door. Some kind of flow. All these ways of connecting and flowing make me feel less alone, and for me this is a Godly feeling. I love playing, or being at a concert where everyone is grooving, where we are all moved by the beat, the rhythm, and the sound. Everyone smiling, dancing, and feeling. Totally in the moment. Totally alive.
