Interview:

Zephaniah 3:17 reveals a remarkable fact about music. It says, “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” Who is mighty? The Lord our God. Who will save? The Lord our God. Who will rejoice over us with joy? The Lord our God. And who will joy over us with singing? The Lord our God. Music is not one of God’s inventions; music is an essential part of His character.

There has never been a time without God; thus, there has never been a moment without music. Ezekiel 28:13 describes Lucifer before his fall from Heaven, and it describes “the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.” We gather from this that it is not unusual for heavenly creatures to be aptly suited for music. At this point in time, however, God’s people must be discerning. Zephaniah 3:17 clearly explains that our Lord is musical, and Ezekiel 28:13 shows us that the Devil, too, has musical ability. Broadly speaking, the music that exists in this world ultimately comes from one of two sources: God or the Devil. Just because something is musical doesn’t mean it’s godly.

As Christian people, we understand that music is a powerful part of our spiritual walk. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Thus, Christians are commanded by God to sing in our hearts, and to admonish each other with songs. In a way we cannot fully comprehend, when we make godly music, we are doing something that God Himself does. We must give earnest heed to make sure we make music with hearts that please Him, in a way that pleases Him.

“Music is not one of God’s inventions; music is an essential part of His character.”
