Interview:

As Christians, we believe music is a gift of God, the Creator of all things. He gives us the ability to create, but we use only that which He has created in the beginning. The primary purpose of music is to express praise and adoration to God. This has an elevating effect in the life. Music is a powerful tool—a language that has the ability to affect our thoughts and feelings, which make up our moral character—who we are. Music has the power to lift the thoughts to heavenly themes or to bring the mind down to dark and unholy thoughts. It is able to bypass the center of reasoning and directly affect us on the emotional and physical levels. There is, therefore, a very high spiritual responsibility in creating music. As Christian songwriters, we would not compose a song for a wedding with a tune similar to “Taps”. We would not compose a song about Calvary with a tune similar to a Souza march. This would be confusion. In creating music we should be careful that the music and the lyrics match. As is the case with any gift of God, music can be and has been perverted, and used to the degradation of man. Because of its extraordinary power, it is vitally important to be selective in the music we allow into our minds and lives. There is a law of nature which says, “By beholding we become changed”. If we want to be conformed into the image of Christ, then we must make our choices in all areas of life toward that end, including music.

“The primary purpose of music is to express praise and adoration to God.”
