Interview:

My partner in Coil, John Balance, once wrote, “Angels are mathematical”. To be honest, there is a lot of music that I think has no spiritual significance whatsoever, but then on the other hand, music for me is not so far from image. One brush stroke in black ink on white paper is just a meaningless daub, but another, embody the most profound expression of Zen you could ever imagine. Likewise, one discordant C-E-F chord played haphazardly on an out-of-tune piano in a school storeroom can be a terrible and uncomfortable noise. Why is it that one movement of air barely ruffles our hair, whilst another causes the fine down on the backs of our necks to rise? I believe it is because we are of the species sometimes called “Human”, imbued with the ability to transmit and receive the most complex and transcendent messages to one another using vibration, not only in air, but in light, and who-knows-what other mediums, directly from person to person, mind to mind, beyond language, beyond distance, and maybe beyond time. Right now, in the brief flash that is the last thousand years of music, we have barely started to take our first baby steps towards perception of these extraordinary processes and powers. The tragedy is that our other character traits, like anger, greed, and pride, seem set to destroy our species, as well as our planet, before we have the chance to find out how to communicate properly on even the simplest of the spiritual levels that lie within our grasp.
