Interview:

I believe there are several forms to the spiritual significance of music. It seems to me that music has a unique significance to each and every creature, even for those that can not hear. I consider music to be one of the most powerful forces in existence. Music has a strong spiritual significance as a form of expression, and it also plays a role in maintaining a balance between order and chaos. Music may bring out any kind of emotion, or tell any kind of story. Music occurs all around us, and can be either constructive, destructive, or both. Even a piece of music that is destructive in nature, or destructive in context, may also be constructive in application, or vise-versa. Music can raise a lot of energy, and it is possible to channel and transform this energy. It is not difficult to understand how that can be related to music in a spiritual sense. Furthermore, music can be symbolic of life and death through the many cycles that occur in the universe. Music can basically symbolize or express anything in existence. Music can also help people to understand things that seem elusive as music can manifest in many forms. Pieces of music can be immensely complex and articulate, composed of many intricate parts woven together with the utmost care. It can also be the absolute opposite. Both can be equally influential to the body, mind, and spirit.

Music can essentially be seen as a series of sounds and vibrations repeated in patterns. It is the meaning that people instinctively relate to it that I think gives music such intense power. Likewise, even something presented to symbolize nothing, does in fact still represent something. The reaction that music causes may create some sort of identity in itself, which in turn creates significance. So technically speaking, even silence can be a form of music. It’s up to you. It’s all in how you view it. Isn’t “nothing” actually really still something? So couldn’t silence be a form of music? Like that pause in the middle of a song, how would that song sound missing that pause? To bring this explanation of my viewpoint to a close, I will state that the value of something, or it’s “true” significance, is always dependent on the interpretation by the person making the evaluation. The fact that we instinctively react to music causes me to believe that it has some level of spiritual significance to everyone. It is also my belief that the possibilities of what spiritual significance music can have to someone is only limited by the individual, and ultimately can be limitless.
