Interview:

Although almost a cliché, we say that music is “the language of the soul”. True? Absolutely! We intuitively know music has a profound power. Every culture has produced music, and the Christian culture of Western Civilization has produced the most sublime music in all of history. When Handel wrote “The Messiah”, he stated that the Heavens themselves opened up to him, while Bach explained, “God writes the music; I just write the notes”. Even the planet hums, and the ancients talked about “the music of the spheres”, knowing that music and mathematics are essentially the same thing: a flawless expression of The Creator’s Truth. Music transcends languages and generations, cultures and beliefs. Several years ago, a group of Chinese university students converted to Christianity while studying the mathematical structure of Bach’s music; they came to the conclusion that such perfection could not exist without the existence of a Creator. Can music be perverted? Without a doubt. Both Plato and Confucius are believed to have said: “I care not who makes the laws if I can write the music”. Ancient Greeks had laws about music, requiring the melody (mind), be subordinated to the harmony (emotions), and the rhythm (physical body). Today we see the widespread use of disordered music to titillate the senses, hyperstimulate a physical response, and destroy our spiritual sense of goodness, truth, and beauty. As the excessive sensuality of music undermines truly Christian culture, our society suffers, our churches suffer, and we suffer. Music is not nice, it is profoundly powerful.

“Music and mathematics are essentially the same thing: a flawless expression of The Creator’s Truth.”
